Academy of Finance

Yesterday was Corey's graduation from The Academy of Finance. This was a two year program through his high school that allowed him to take college level classes and earn credit for them while concurrently enrolled in high school. I am very proud of him for sticking with it, I know it wasn't easy. He is looking very handsome in his suit before we leave.

I singled him out of the group picture at the end. Of course! He's mine. :)

There were 24 graduates from his school, the largest class ever, including his cute little cousin Staci. (Ok, she's not as little as Corey, she had to squat down to get her head even with his!) She earned her associates degree while she was enrolled in this program.

I love this boy! Next Friday will be his high school graduation...more pics to come!

Well...it was a great idea anyway...

I have always wanted to try to skate all the way downtown. So I had this great idea for Monday morning....we would park our car at the nearest entrance to the Jordan River Parkway, I would skate, and Peter would keep up on his bike. We woke up to a beautiful morning and headed out on our trek. The Parkway was packed...I don't think I've ever seen it so busy! We took a couple of pictures and headed out. All was going well...until we hit about 3800 south. Stupid me, I didn't think to take a picture...but due to the weekend rains the trail was completely under water for about 50 yards! Peter tried to ride through it to see how far it was, but it was so deep his feet were submerged even on his bike! No way I was going to make it through on skates. So, unfortunately we had to turn around and head back. I was majorly disappointed, but someday I WILL finish this quest!

Happy Mother's Day!

Here are some of the women I am grateful for this Mother's Day:

This is my cute little mom. She is probably the most patient person I have ever known. I don't think I've ever heard her say anything bad about anyone in my whole life. She must have been Thumper's mom. She is smart, hits a pretty mean golf ball, and a great ballroom dancer. She is strong...both physically and emotionally. She has always been such a good example to me. I didn't need a lot of disciplining when I was little because I just never wanted to disappoint my mom and that was enough to keep me in line. She is soft spoken and gentle and I wish I was more like her. I have always thought she was an angel.

This is my cute little mother-in-law. Now, I've only met her once and that was a year and a half ago. It's been too long since I've seen her. She reminds me a lot of my mom. She is also very soft spoken and patient, and she laughs at all Peters silliness, which is a lot! I haven't been able to spend much time with her, but I can tell from the way Peter talks about her that she is also a very special person. She lives in Canada, much too far away, but he talks to her usually a couple of times or more each week. I know she must be a wonderful mother because she has raised such a good son who is an awesome husband. I know how much he loves her and she will always be his "mummy". :) I am so grateful for her influence in our lives.

This is my "other" mother-in-law...or my first mother-in-law. She has been a part of my life for 30 years and probably knows me even better than my own mother. We are two peas in a pod and she has been there for me through some pretty tough times. Legally we may not be related anymore, but spiritually I think we knew each other before we came her. (She knows what I'm talking about). When we lived overseas she wrote or called every single week. We have wonderful memories of adventures in Europe, Virginia, Jackson, Tucson, and California....to name a few. I doubt I could ever repay her for her love and support throughout the years. She has been a great blessing in my life.
How cute is this?? Britt is in Italy right now and this is what she sent me for Mother's Day. It's amazing to see your daughters grow up and become women. It's even more amazing when deep words of wisdom come sprouting out of their mouths! Brittany is out to save the world and I think she just might do it. :) Anyone who knows her knows how much fun she is to be around. If she were a Native American her Indian name would be "Tenderheart".

Finally, we have Rachel. She has always been wise beyond her years and seems to know just the right thing to say at the right time. She has been my friend as well as my daughter and my "happy child". She is going to be an awesome mother when she finally gets around to giving me a grandchild. ;) She has so many qualities I wish I had. I still want to be just like her when I grow up! I love her tons!

To all of these wonderful women in my life I love you all and wish you a most Happy Mother's Day!

Race for the Cure

I find myself surrounded every day by reminders of this terrible disease, breast cancer, from people I know who are either fighting for their lives or have already lost it. This morning Peter, Robin, Lindsey, their friend Kira, and I set out with about 18,000 other people at the Gateway in Salt Lake City to run The Race for the Cure. What an awesome but eerie sight to see so many people who are fighting or have been affected by breast cancer. Each person wears a name on their back in remembrance or support of someone they know who is struggling or has lost their lives. It's a real eye opener. You can see from this picture that the crowd goes on for what seems like forever. I think next spring the Gateway will be unable to support so many people as the crowd grows larger year after year. It's main purpose is to raise money to find a cure, but it's a wonderful tribute to those who have been touched by this disease. My heart and hope goes out to every one of them.

The Walk

Graduation Day May 2, 2009

Team Shiz! (Minus Don the Duck Dunn) John, Annie (9 months pregnant) Brett, Terry
New and hopefully long lasting friendships. Holy Cow I'm short!

Terry, Jennifer, and Jorge

I'm right in the middle there if you get out your microscope.

Using same microscope, you can see my little head poking up right above the stage.

Receiving my two seconds of glory....

Top 10 things I will remember about my days at University of Phoenix:

10. Being scared to death my first night of class. APA formatting?? What??
9. Taco Time breaks. If I never see another crisp taco it will be too soon.
8. 10 Weeks of statistics with Rene'. Who knew you could do THAT with excel?
7. Keeping Annie and Brett from killing each other.
6. Don the Duck Dunn as Daaaavid Letterman.
5. Team Shiz skits, they were THE best.
4. Hand tied bow ties ala Dave Howe.
3. Insulting Franz Kolb by asking if he was from Germany. (It was Austria) I know that's really why I got an A-.
2. Butt Crack Kerry. Enough said.
1. The expression on John's face when he asked how I was feeling and I said "much bigger", thanks! (Inside joke)

Seriously, I have made some really good friends and learned some valuable lessons. I am so glad I took the opportunity to finish what I started so long ago. One HUGE thing to check off my bucket list!
